Removing Advertisements From Web Pages

Thursday, December 28, 2006

This tutorial will explain how to remove almost every single advertisement from webpages and block nearly every bad site that you might be sent to. This is done so by altering your hosts file. Just follow the directions below.

1. The first step is to right click on the start button and choose "Explore". In the address bar type in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and hit enter. This should bring you to a page that includes a file called "hosts".

We need to first make a backup of your original hosts file. Right click on the hosts file and choose rename. Rename the file to something like hostsOLD.

2. Ok, now that we have backed up the hosts file we can create our new one. The fine experts over at mpvs.com have created one already for us that has blocked thousands of bad websites. So right click this link http://www.wallofflames.com/wn/block/hosts.zip and save it to your desktop.

This will save a zip file to your desktop, simply unzip the files out of the zip onto your desktop. Now you should see a file on your desktop called "HOSTS", this is your new hosts file. Right click on it and choose cut. Now navigate back to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and paste it in there.

Congratulations, now you have successfully blocked tons of bad sites from even appearing. The only problem we have now is that everyone of those banners will appear with a "page cannot be displayed" message so we need to cover those with a blank image.

3. We can cover this by using a tiny program called Edexter. You can download this program by clicking on this link http://www.wallofflames.com/wn/block/dxtr134.exe

Open up edexter and make sure it is set to startup automatically when you r computer starts and you can also choose weather you want a graphic to take the place of each ad which edexter will place a small little pink dash in the place, or you can choose to simply have plain white over each area where the ad would appear.

If you have any questions about this proccess or any problems feel free to leave them here and I will gladly help. This will also dramatically cut down on your changes of ever getting any more spyware on your computer in the future as well

Some people may still want to view hosts with adwords/adsense enabled. Here is this modded hosts file. Use this instead of the other hosts file if you want to see adwords.
